Do-It-Yourself Relationship Therapy
All relationships go through good and bad times. However, when they hit a rough patch in their relationship, most
couples don’t have the money to go to relationship therapy. Some may be able to afford it, but they choose not to
spend their money on counceling.
These couples are not necessarily any less determined to make their relationships work than couples who go to
therapy. In all likelihood, they simply are not comfortable with revealing certain parts of their lives to someone
they don’t know even if that person is a licensed therapist.
If you and your partner are having issues and perhaps your partner doesn’t want relationship therapy, you can still
take steps to rebuild and heal your relationship. While you can do a lot for your relationship on your own, it is
obviously better when the two of you are involved.
Most of us would rather deal with problems on our own no matter what they are so it is not surprising that
relationship therapy is something people are doing on their own as well.
The first step is to start thinking in a positive way. If you and your partner are having issues that are making
things difficult, it is time to take a look at what brought you together so many years ago.
Take the time to put your thoughts onto paper for your partner, snuggle with each other, or do a few slow dances
together. Get to know each other on a personal level again without worrying about bills, kids, and the many other
things that distract both of you every day.
You have a variety of options when it comes to do-it-yourself relationship therapy. There are a lot of books
written about these options that can help you sort through the options. Choose the one that is best for you and
your relationship. Everyone will make a different choice.
One of the best choices for do-it-yourself relationship therapy is what is called "Imago". This is the Latin
word for "match". There are many books at a bookstore or even at your library that describe how this therapy works.
This is a type of therapy that involves both partners.
You also may want to consider doing some role playing so you can get a feel for what your partner sees when he or
she looks at and listen to you every day. This may show you how the words you say really are not perceived the way
you think they are. Often, what you and your partner say comes across to each other in a very different way than is
Working on your communication is the key to your relationship therapy. It is possible to do relationship therapy
and improve your relationship on your own.
